The goal of dysphagia management is to optimize the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of the oropharyngeal swallow, to maintain adequate nutrition and hydration, and to promote oral hygiene. Clinicians should consider all other cognitive, environmental, medical and physical factors which may act as potential barriers to treatment progress.  This session includes the hierarchy of dysphagia management, factors specific to each client’s preference, their risks of dehydration and malnutrition, the effectiveness of positioning, oral sensation techniques and swallowing maneuvers.  Other components of skilled intervention include oral hygiene routines, client and staff education and eligibility factors for the Frazier Free water Protocol.
